About Belle Terrace at Avon Old Farms
Historically, England played an enormous role in the heritage surrounding Belle Terrace, the former Avon Old Farms Inn. John North was the first of his family to arrive to America from England, settling in what would be known as Farmington today. The town was soon called Northington, which was a hybrid of North Farmington. Eventually it became known as "Nod" or the North District of the Church of Farmington. The road joining Route 44 at the north corner of Belle Terrace takes its name from this, and our official address is One Nod Road.
Thomas North, the son of John North, settled the present site in 1678. After battles with the British Colonial Army in King Phillip's War, North became a "Freeman" and for his services received from the King of England a grant of land on the east side of the Farmington River "under the mountain and north of the Hartford-Albany turnpike". Thomas North's son, Nathaniel, built his home on a parcel of his father's land in 1757, and parts of Belle Terrace are original pieces of the home. Nathaniel's grandson, Isiah, left the site to his son Joseph, a blacksmith in the area. He built a stone shop, across from which an Inn was built, Marshall's Tavern. Passengers from the Hartford-Albany-Boston stagecoach were accommodated both at the Tavern and at the North homestead, which eventually grew into the Old Farms Inn. The Marshall Tavern was demolished in 1933.
The name, Belle Terrace, was found within the historical files of the property and originates from one of the first owners, whose fondness for the property allowed him to name the first dwellings for his wife.
